I Used To Be Sam

(Soul pop based in Basel originally from the USA, Switzerland)

The multifaceted American alternative pop artist that many have come to know as Annie Goodchild, has announced today her artist name change to ‘I Used to Be Sam.’ Her remarkable career has touched various corners of the earth, from the U.S. as a world-touring vocalist to Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern JukeBox, to performing in and out of Europe’s largest cities as the illustrious voice behind the music group Melou, to finally opening for Alicia Keys under the Annie Goodchild Solo Project in the city she calls home - Basel, Switzerland.

In the years following her latest single-release in 2018, the vocalist whose soulful voice has often been compared to the stylings of Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, and Sarah Vaughan, has been on a two-year journey of self-reflection and self-love while unraveling the details of her ambiguous past. Transracially adopted at the age of one and a half, she grew up determined to find her biological family and track down the origins of her storied past. It is through this journey that she came to discover the identities of her biological parents, reconnect with her Puerto Rican roots, and learn that on the day she was born, she was named Samantha (Sam).

On January 20, 2022, the artist will debut ‘Gentle,’ the first single off her self-titled and highly-anticipated EP, ‘I Used to Be Sam,’ on all global streaming platforms. ‘Gentle’ is the first chapter of a 5-song journey which combines elements of songwriting, storytelling, video documentary, and interviews with members of the transracial adoptee community to narrate stories and testimony that is unique to her own.
